BACKGROUND:

"Depending on what happens, I may abandon Shinra"

The world of Final Fantasy VII was one where magic and technology went hand in hand. The Planet’s essence was known as the Lifestream and it existed below the surface of the planet; it was what allowed life to thrive on the surface and without the Lifestream the planet would have become a barren wasteland. This didn’t mean that the Lifestream was infinite however: all living things came from the Lifestream and all things returned to it when they passed. Through the Lifestream the Planet had a certain amount of awareness, and it was able to interact with people known as Cetra, and knew when it was under attack.

In some parts of the world the Lifestream breached the surface of the planet and appeared in a liquid form known as mako. The springs and geysers where these breaches happened were known for their beauty and danger. Mako contact commonly caused a phenomena called mako poisoning where one’s mind collapsed from a combination of exposure to the essence of the Planet as well as all the memories, emotions, and knowledge of all who had ever lived before.

At some point Shinra Electric Power Company made a discovery: mako could be used as an energy source. They began constructing reactors across the planet in order to extract the Lifestream, turned it into mako, and used that energy to power their technology. They quickly became a world power because of this, and by the time the game took place they essentially ruled the entire planet. Unfortunately though, this use of the Lifestream had a negative effect on the planet and the areas around the mako reactors became barren and lifeless.

Sephiroth was born around the year εγλ 1980 to two of Shinra’s scientists. He was taken from his mother immediately after birth and remained in a science lab as an experiment until he was sent out to fight in a war sometime between εγλ 1991 - 1992. There he made his first friends with two other SOLDIERs First Class and the three were frequently found sparing together until Genesis and Angeal deserted Shinra. It’s because of the events that surrounded his friend’s desertion that Sephiroth finally began questioning why he stayed at Shinra and in September of εγλ 0002 Sephiroth told Zack that he was most likely leaving Shinra, and the mission to Nibelheim at the end of the month was likely to be their last together.

PERSONALITY:

On the outside, Sephiroth gives off the air of being aloof from everyone else. Growing up in a lab and as a living science experiment for Professor Hojo, Sephiroth learned to always be calm, collected, and in control. Even after he leaves the lab to join the war effort in Wutai, his demeanor doesn’t seem to soften and he gains a reputation for being cold and uncaring.

This couldn’t be further from the truth, as shown by his friendship with Angeal and Genesis. While it’s probable that the three were initially drawn to each other because they were the strongest SOLDIERs, their bond was real and genuine. The three were known to spar together for fun and when Genesis gets injured and doesn’t heal properly Sephiroth immediately offers to become a donor to help the other man. The knowledge that he can’t help his friend, that he’s not “compatible”, dwells in the back of his mind; after all what was the point of all his enhancements if he couldn’t help his friends?

As the strongest SOLDIER, and arguably the strongest person on Planet, Sephiroth’s confidence in his own abilities dances on the edge of total arrogance. He lets one of Genesis’s most powerful fire spells surround him in order to give the other man false confidence since he knows he can withstand and repel the damage. Despite this, he’s not out for fame or glory. Several times Genesis states how dissatisfied he is that Sephiroth gained the sole reputation as the Hero of Wutai and each time Sephiroth states Genesis can have all the glory as he wants none of it.

For those he deems worthy, Sephiroth's respect knows no bounds. Zack gains an initial amount of trust and respect as Angeal’s student, but after interacting with the younger man Sephiroth begins leaning on him more and more. He puts his faith in Zack’s abilities with people, hoping the younger SOLDIER will be able to convince Angeal to come back and that Genesis would follow, and when that doesn’t work he trusts Zack to help him ‘attempt’ to capture the two Firsts when they attack Midgar. When he makes the decision to seriously consider leaving Shinra the only person he tells is Zack as he knows the younger man won’t betray him, and potentially so he wouldn’t feel abandoned by Sephiroth.

Despite his cold and aloof demeanor Sephiroth does exhibit a dry sense of humor. He’s shown teasing Genesis about his obsession with the poem LOVELESS, joking about a lecture he received from Angeal, and even chuckling at Zack’s hyperactivity. When Zack fails to capture Hollender, Sephiroth states it will have to go on his permanent record and Zack obviously interprets it as a joke.

Sephiroth is also extremely intelligent. When he encounters Zack in Wutai he correctly infers that the only reason Zack would be alone when his life was in danger would be if Angeal had left as well. He also puts together the pieces of what caused Genesis and Angeal to leave Shinra through the brief conversations he has with the former after his defection and is able to understand the science behind their creation as he attempts to find a way to help his friends.


POWER:

SOLDIER 1st Class: Sephiroth is the original SOLDIER and as such has all the associated enhancements taken up to eleven. He’s stronger and faster than all other SOLDIERs and can take hits that would level entire towns. Sephiroth wields an odachi longer than he is tall one handed and uses it to cut through anything (people, monsters, concrete, metal, etc) in his way with ease. This isn’t to say he can’t be killed. Sephiroth is still human despite his enhancements and can be killed, the issue is that, for baseline humans, his speed makes it appear as if he’s teleporting... which makes him a bit difficult to hit.

Sephiroth’s enhancements also affect his sword Masamune. He’s able to dismiss the sword from the physical plane and summon it back at will, and he can infuse it with his own energy in order to unleash his Octaslash attack. Upon activation, Octaslash allows Sephiroth to unleash eight rapid slashes at a single target.

Materia: All of Sephiroth’s materia are maxed out so he would have the option of using the spells at any level. At first level the spells are contained to a 5 foot radius around the target, at second level the radius expands to 10 feet and the damage it deals is doubled, at third level the radius expands out to 15 feet and the damage doubles again. All spells focus on a single target, but others within the radius of the spell are affected. Spells cast at higher levels take longer to unleash, and if Sephiroth is hit he can lose concentration on the spell and not be able to cast. Sephiroth has access to the following Materia:

Fire: Creates a ball of fire that streaks towards a single target that can be dodged. Flammable objects in its area of effect would catch fire.

Ice: Creates an icicle in front of the target that bursts and sends shards of ice towards them. This can be dodged.

Lightning: Summons a bolt of lightning from the sky that always hits its target.

Earth: Causes the ground beneath the target’s feet to quake, the attack can knock the target off their feet or knock those at the center of the effect into the air. This can be dodged and targets who are flying/hovering/etc are immune.

Time: Has three different abilities: Haste, Slow, and Stop. Haste buffs the target allowing them to gain energy for their more powerful attacks faster, Slow debuffs the target and causes them to gain energy slower, and a Stop halts all movement and action for about fifteen seconds.

Cure: Healing materia with four abilities: Cure, Cura, Regen, and Curaga. Cure can heal small wounds, Cura heals moderate wounds, and Curaga can heal major wounds. Regen heals moderate wounds over the course of about a minute instead of all at once.

Magnify: Support materia that can be linked to any of the other materia Sephiroth carries. When linked, the Magnify materia allows the caster to select multiple targets as opposed to a single target. When multiple targets are selected, the spell’s effects are reduced by about a quarter.

Maybe He’s Born With It: Sephiroth’s hair will always look as if a breeze is flowing through. The strength of the breeze will vary depending on if a Dramatic Moment is happening, and the breeze can result in anything from the ends of his hair fluttering slightly to the full length of his hair blowing next to him. His hair also always has a faint shimmer to it.

[ It’s late at night when the camera clicks on to show Sephiroth in his house, leaning over his communicator. He clearly was in bed before the video started, wearing sweatpants and with his hair pulled back somehow. Then he began speaking and his tone of voice made it clear he was Not Happy. ]

I was just awoken by a woman climbing into my bed, claiming the Silver Elite would never believe she’d managed to get this far.

[ So. Not. Happy. ]

Rude. This is your fault and you will fix it. Or else.

[ He straightened up, glare not subsiding even as laughter could be heard from offscreen. His glare shifted to whoever else was there and the video cut off as Sephiroth raised his hand, revealing Masamune. ]
